Mabel Rutherford Mabel Rutherford, 88, of Salisbury, MO formerly of Decatur, IL, died September 25, 2001 at Moberly Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Rutherford was born December 16, 1912 in Salisbury, Missouri, daughter of Louis and Wilhelminia (Klaus) Scheiderer. She received her bachelor's degree from Northeast Missouri State Teachers' College in 1939 and her master's degree from Teachers' College at Columbia University in 1945. She taught school for 38 years in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. She started the first Cooperative Office Occupations class under state supervision at Decatur High School in Decatur, IL in February 1945. She retired from the Decatur School District. She had been president of the Decatur branch of American Association of University Women and corresponding secretary of Illinois State Division of AAUW. She served as president of Illinois Business Education Association. She was a member of Delta Pi Epsilon, Pi Omega Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Decatur, IL, Retired Teachers Association and the Chariton County Retired Teachers Association, a former member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and its Women's Association, and member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and LWML in Salisbury. She had resided in Salisbury since 1997. She was married to James C. Rutherford in 1957 in Salisbury and he preceded her in death in 1994. Mabel is survived by one stepson Robert Rutherford and wife Dorothy of Rochester, IL; two step daughters Lorena Bane of LeRoy, IL and Erma Sutton of Mt. Zion, IL; brothers Gustuv and Henry Scheiderer both of Salisbury, MO; five step grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren, four nephews and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Oscar Scheiderer, sister Lydia Linneman and nephew Edward Lee Scheiderer. Bernice and Richard Lee Epperly were married on December 31, 1938 and became parents of Richard Lee, Jr., Stephen, and Carolyn. She was preceded in death by their son Richard Lee, Jr. in 1939, her husband in 1999, her parents and a brother Otis Forrest Hulett. Grotjan, 78, of Keytesville, Missouri passed away on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Brunswick Nursing Home. He was a lifelong resident of the Keytesville area. He was born on August 11, 1923 to Edward M. and Marie Heishman Grotjan on the "King Hill" farm near Brunswick, Missouri. He grew up during the "Great Depression" in a rural area and attended rural schools in his early years. Later he attended the Brunswick Elementary School and graduated from Brunswick High School on May 21, 1941. He attended the University of Missouri, majoring in Agriculture and becoming a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity. He was drafted into the US Navy December 14, 1944 and went through boot camp at the Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. He was assigned to Shoemaker, California and later on October 14, 1945 he reported to duty on the USS Jicarilla in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1946. On May 19, 1945, Harvey married Juanita Clanton in the Chapel at the Great Lakes Naval Station. Harvey returned to Chariton County Missouri after being discharged from the Navy and has worked in farming and agriculture ever since. During his farming career he received the County Balanced Farming Award in 1958 and again in 1973. In 1964 the Grotjan family was named Chariton County Farm Family of the Year, and Harvey's name appears on the University of Missouri Leaders Honor Roll. He was honored for growing certified seeds in conjunction with the University of Missouri for forty years and received the Premier Seed Growers Award from the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in 1994. Grotjan devoted most of his time to civic and agriculture organizations. He was a member of the Keytesville School Board for six years, the Region Two School Board for two years and State of Missouri School Board for three years. He served as Chariton County President of Farm Bureau for seventeen years and as a member of several state committees for the Missouri Farm Bureau. In 1977, Grotjan was recognized for being a fifty-year member of Missouri and Chariton County Farm Bureau. He served on the board of the Keytesville United Methodist Church where he had been a member of fifty-five years. He served on the Chariton County Extension Council, FFA Advisory Council, MFA Oil Board, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, and American Legion Post Number 0007, and a charter member of the National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors. In 1998 the Keytesville Chamber of Commerce named Harvey Grotjan as the "Man of the Year." Governor Bond appointed Grotjan to the Missouri Agriculture and Small Business Development Authority where he served a four-year term. Later, he was appointed by Governor Ashcroft to the Missouri Soil and Water Commission for a six-year term. Grotjan is survived by his wife, Juanita, of the home and five children. Harvey E. Grotjan, Jr. and his wife, Laura, of Lake St. Louis, MO; Marsha Burton and her husband Doug of Leawood, Kansas; Barbara Thurmon and her husband Greg, of Chillicothe, MO; Lisa Albera and her husband, Peter, of Lee's Summit, MO; and Lana Richards and her husband, Bill, of Keytesville, MO. Morris was born August 29, 1914 in Ireton, IA the son of Clyde and Ida Ola (Jones) Wills. He married Dorena Schmitt on March 1, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska and she survives of the home. Morris was a farmer and also worked in a gas conversion business. He was a member of the Keytesville United Methodist Church, and a 50 year member of the Ireton American Legion. Morris served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. during WW II. Morris is survived by his wife Dorena, three daughters and sons-in-law; Linda Jo and Dr. Mark Pressley in Columbia, MO, Leota Rae and Michael Maag of Columbia, MO, and Caren and Roger Sonichsen of Hawarden, IA, one sister Bernice France of Ireton, IA, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born December 31, 1920 to H.B. and Sara "Ella" (Viers) Sellers in Elliott, Iowa. Rae married Gloria Harger of Rock Port, Missouri on September 8, 1942 in Rock Port, MO. Mr. Sellers served his country in the US Army as a tank commander, serving in the South Pacific Theater during WW II. He was awarded several honors including the "Bronze Star." Following the war he farmed in the Roanoke Community until he retired and moved to Keytesville. He was a member of the Armstrong United Methodist Church where he served on the board for many years, the Armstrong Lions Club, he served on the Salisbury school board for 17 years and he also served on the Fayette Co-op board. Rae was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Boyd, Homer, Earl, Kenneth and Jim Sellers and one sister, Zelma Straight. Nellie was a graduate of Amboy, IL high school, she received her bachelors degree from North East Missouri, and masters from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. Nellie taught school for many years in Edwardsville, IL, Glasgow, Keytesville and Salisbury. She has lived in Keytesville since 1957. Nellie is a member of United Methodist Church in Keytesville. She belonged to the Almeria Miller Club in Keytesville, Republican Women's Club, was president of the Business and Professional Women's Club in Edwardsville, IL active in the Illinois Council of Math Teachers, serving on the governing board. She received first place in the Missouri State Fair talent contest in 1996, playing the Alexander's Ragtime Band and the Missouri Waltz on the piano. George on January 25, 1948 in Salisbury and he preceded her in death on August 21, 1971. Crystal was a housewife, a member of the United Methodist Church in Salisbury, Order of the Easter Star (Warren Star Chapter), she volunteered for the American Cancer Society for over 50 years serving as president of the Chariton County Unit for 11 years, she served on the Farm Bureau Board for many years, and was on the board of trustee's for 6 years of the Chariton County Health Department where she helped organize the department in 1986. On November 30, 1929, she married Leslie Schnetzler of Salisbury, MO, where they resided as farmers. Later in life they moved to Madison, MO and after Leslies' death she moved to Moberly, MO where she resided until her death. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Moberly, the Trinity United Methodist Women, and a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a volunteer for the Randolph County OATS, MACC of Moberly and member of the Chariton County Historical Society. Zeta married Charles Adams on May 22, 1917 in Slater, and he preceded her in death on October 24, 1982. His work as a boilermaker for the Railroad took them many places, Cypress, IL, Salem, IL, Cleveland, OH, and Dillionvale, OH. He retired in 1934, and they moved to a farm in the Pleasant wood area east of Salisbury. After a few years they moved to a farm near Springfield, MO, where they lived for 23 years. They returned to Salisbury in 1963. Zeta was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury. She married Eugene Joseph Nagel on June 18, 1946 in Salisbury, MO and he preceded her in death on December 12, 1993. Emelia was a lifelong Salisbury resident. She was a homemaker and bookeeper for the Nagel Service Station and Car Wash. Emelia was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Choir, St. Joseph Altar Sodality, and St. Joseph School Foundation. Emelia is survived by three son's: Gerald Nagel and wife Rose of Tulsa, OK, Thomas Nagel of St. Joe, MO, and Ron Nagel and wife Pam of St. Charles, MO, two daughter's: Elizabeth Nagel of Philadelphia, PA and Ann Carter and husband Richard of Salisbury, daughter-in-law Carolyn Nagel of Salisbury, two brother-in-law's; Virgil Nagel and Marvin Nagel and wife Marie, and sister-in-law's; Lucy Wood and Elvira Nagel-Vogt, ten grandchildren; Mike Nagel and wife Sheila, Greg Nagel, Dan Nagel, Stacy Nagel, Stephen Nagel, Allen Carter, Aaron Carter, Brett Carter, Amber Nagel, and Ryan Nagel, three great grandchildren, Brock and Ashley Nagel and T. J. Beavers. Emelia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Eugene, son, Robert J. Nagel, sister's, Sister Corona Striegel and Mildred Widmer. Visitation will be Friday, December 7, from 6-9:00 p.m. with a Rosary/Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. at the Summerville Funeral Home in Salisbury. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salisbury with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Church Parrish Memorial Fund.
